Vantaggi

Free lunch, snacks and coffee

Svantaggi

Poor management by individuals that have had no training to manage anybody but are also are not professionals themselves. High turnover of staff regularly. Whether you have been there for a year or 5 years you are not safe depending on if you adhere to the 'Smarkets' way. No worklife balance - Its more like a strict school where you do as you are told or else. No HR support. HR does not exist its more for gossip to feed back to the leadership team on who fits in or not. Narcisstic CEO that presents you with a presentation when you join on how to 'get to know him and work with him'. No career growth more like college projects you are asked to produce, that make no impact for yourself or the company. Non existent work culture just toxic. Most people are just staying put and waiting until the next best offer to leave.

Vantaggi

- Interesting work if you like sports gambling and/or finance - Broad tech stack to learn from - Great individual contributors - Chances to travel to other offices around the world

Svantaggi

Working for the Smarkets CEO is one of your best chances to experience what it would be like to work for Donald Trump except the Smarkets CEO doesn't have the ability to negotiate or sell anything. For example he offers employees who would like to work from home, the opportunity to work less hours and get paid less instead. He is the epitome of a narcissist, he has opinions about everything, but knowledge about none of it. The people inside the company who will defend him are classic bootlickers, and placate him at every turn. The flat structure doesn't serve you, the common employee like you might think. It actually gives you less defense against the CEO's micromanagement, outbursts and outright bullying. All the managers leave after a year or two because the CEO is impossible to deal with. Most employees I know at Smarkets make their top priority at work avoiding the CEO at all costs. And like another reviewer mentioned, you can only avoid him for so long before you are on his radar. At which point you get to engage in the CEOs favorite activity, public shaming.

Thank you for your well rounded review and your feedback. Although we started as a completely flat hierarchy, especially when we were a small startup, we have since progressed by adding some more structure for clarity and to create opportunities within the company, since we broke the 100 person barrier. We’re sorry to hear about some negative experiences and we hope you gave the feedback internally to our teams to help us move forward. In any case, we take these reviews seriously to ensure we are always bettering ourselves and the company we work for.
