Vantaggi
Historically State Farm was an excellent place to work. The employees truly strived to treat our customers "like a good neighbor" and the phrase "State Farm Family" was routinely used to describe fellow employees. State Farm was/is the largest P/C carrier in the world, and the employees were the reason why.
Svantaggi
From an employee perspective, the company is just a shell of what it once was. The company has made many changes in the last five years that have been all but destroyed any semblance of a work like balance. I remember the day I was told I would need to send an email in order to visit the restroom. Mind you I have a bachelors degree, a masters degree, numerous insurance designations and worked in management but the professional courtesies once experienced were gone. I remember volunteering to give up an approved vacation day expressly so a co-worker could go on a family trip after her request was denied. My vacation day was taken from me, but my coworker's request was still denied. BTW that coworker is now a manager at Lib Mutual. I remember a coworker giving 9 months notice asking for a week off in March. After 6 months, she purchased plane tix to FL. Two months before her vacation she was granted 4 of the 5 days off. Apparently the month of March is a heavy vacation month in the Northeast. She no longer works for the Farm. The number of people who have left the company is truly staggering. I encourage you to ask about turnover rates in your interview process. I have worked at State Farm for 19 years and am very sad at what it has become for employees. On the other hand, if you are interested in a call center cubicle, working strange hours with little time off and having your work micromanaged by managers who in many cases were promoted for reasons other than work product, this might be for you.
