Pretty much everything. Management are utterly useless and don't even know what they're supposed to be doing let alone what the people they're meant to be managing should do. You can ask 3 different people and get 3 different answers to every question and still be none the wiser. Difficult if not impossible to get proper, relevant, job-specific training but they have a range of useless, nosy, borderline offensive initiatives for interfering with your private life or making themselves feel important with their tick-box exercises. Don't take sick leave - you will be dragged in for a half hour interview where they demand answers to completely non-relevant, personal questions. Really sinister, Big-Brother stuff. If you mention the obvious lack of proper training or the inappropriateness of some of the policies, they look at you as though you're mad. As others have said, it's a who you know, face-fits organisation. Challenge anyone higher up, even just to share an opinion and you will be marked down as a trouble maker and they will find reasons to get you out. Can be hard to get hold of management when you need them. There's constant change with senior management - seems as though someone is always getting sacked, suspended or accused of some wrongdoing. Upshot is a very directionless senior management. No help from HR - they don't care about staff, just sucking up to management. Data protection laws are regularly broken - other people's personal information is passed around without their permission like it's no biggie. Taxpayers' money is gleefully frittered away and wasted. Day rate contractors are on ludicrous sums of money whilst many permanent staff are on poverty wages. Systems are old and not fit for purpose. There's a strange, deep seated loathing of students among management in particular, probably because they mostly didn't go to university but it's an odd attitude to have to your primary customers and speaks volumes about SLC and their lack of professionalism or customer care. There's no loyalty to staff. Again, very little to no real, pertinent training - although you will be highly qualified in biting your tongue and agreeing with nonsense just to not rock the boat before long or you will be gone. Really invasive, condescending, hopeless HR and management. There's a big blame culture and a huge reluctance by management to take responsibility - basically, whatever goes wrong (and there's a LOT that goes wrong), it's always someone else's fault - usually the person lowest on the pay scale who had least to do with it! I could go on. To keep it short: do not ever accept a job at SLC if you value yourself. It's a terrible place to work.
