The systems developed are great and make a difference to the public. There are a number of great people left at the company, but these are all in the lower down reaches doing the day to day work.

The company used to be a great place to work where individuals felt valued and listened to. Since a restructure a couple of years ago, key individuals were pushed out the door under very suspicious circumstances and replaced by individuals who don't care about the staff, just the financial bottom line. This has come at an extreme cost to morale in the company. As such hundreds of years of experience has either been pushed out or left leaving a small skeleton staff of individuals with the knowledge to carry the business forward. There have been so many high up management posts created for certain individuals, which didn't go out for application, it seems as though favouritism is rife, and those in the pockets of the upper management get a well paid job. Since all of this, it is clear they have tried to reduce the salary budget, but done so in completely the wrong way. Employing these upper management positions has had an effect on the staff who are actually on the ground doing the work, talking to customers etc. These numbers have reduced, either by people leaving and roles not replaced, or by making redundancies where there isn't really any staff numbers that can be lost. The management structure is now very top heavy. Concerns have been raised by numerous staff about the consistently heavy workload and other concerns, but these almost seem ignored by management. Nothing ever changes, and more staff being let go creating even more of a burden on the remaining staff. Morale was at an all time low, and wouldn't be surprised if those left aren't looking for jobs elsewhere. If this is the case, even more knowledge and experience will be taken out and this will have an effect on the end product, which in turn will put critical services and the individuals they support at risk. Career progression for the everyday staff member stalled. Benefits were ok and compensation used to be great with yearly bonuses based on the smaller individuals companies performance. However, in later years this has not been the case. The struggling areas of the business are now held up by the profitable ones, but this has lead to no bonuses given to anyone. The staff in the profitable areas of the business are not compensated for the amount of work and success seen.

I could write a lot on this, but the two biggest challenges within the company are: 1. Disorganized processes and slow decision making. Operations felt chaotic, more like the downside of a start-up than the upside. Decisions moved slowly, inefficiencies were everywhere and few people seemed empowered or accountable to fix them. The technology, infrastructure, and ways of working often felt outdated and unnecessarily manual. 2. A People team lacking credibility and capability. From leadership down, the People function appeared out of depth. Initiatives such as career frameworks and progression tools being introduced felt more like surface level exercises than meaningful strategies. Despite the talk of being “people focused,” the execution of any initiatives lacked clarity, consistency and genuine understanding of what employees actually need.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m pleased our remote / hybrid working suited you, but I’m sorry that other aspects of your time did not meet your expectations. We recognise that some of our processes and tools have been too manual and slow. As we integrate our group of companies into one organisation, we’re investing in clearer processes, better systems and sharper ownership so decisions move faster. You’ve also raised concerns about our People team and career development. Our career frameworks are currently in the design and build phase to create greater transparency, with a communicated deadline of the end of our financial year. Alongside this, we’ve introduced Development Planning, Squiggly Careers training and toolkits, and a mentoring programme to support colleagues with their career development.
