Vantaggi
Most of the time is available to explore new and different mathematical ideas to solve problems which either come from industry or are self-motivated and serve personal and team development. Such work can be very rewarding for a mathematician and represent the ideal non-academic environment. And this is all the more the case as the whole team is a group of very bright mathematicians who can work to produce great synergies.
Svantaggi
As noted in other reviews, the problem arises when technical top management gets involved in supervising projects, particularly at a mathematical level. In many cases there is a lack of understanding for the work that has been done by the team or the directions the team want to go in as the next steps. The resulting discussions with management can last for hours on end and lead to absolutely no conclusion. On other days they may take a turn into pure philosophy and involve more life in general than maths. The behaviour of technical top management can be erratic at times which can make life as a researcher very difficult.
