Vantaggi

Having a job in the government during a bad economy can be very helpful.

Svantaggi

EBSA National Office is very different than the regional offices. Many investigators and benefit advisors have complained about their individual regional directors but the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Program Operations has not removed them because they still perform well based on numbers. The National Office is quite similar with characters who can be difficult to work with, however this is typical of the government. While pay is low in both the regional and national offices, the regional promotion ladder is quite transparent. The national office ladder is much less transparent. Having worked in many different government offices, I have ultimately found that EBSA employees have gotten too comfortable.

Vantaggi

Great work-life balance. Typically 8:30 AM to 5 PM (flexible). Generous leave (annual and sick) policies. Agency is more laid back than other specialized agencies, especially compared to the IRS, SSA or US DOL sister agencies.

Svantaggi

Salary could be better given the expertise needed for the role (common complaint, so it's not a big deal). Depending on your role, work can often scrutinized unnecessarily out of a concern for "customer service."

Vantaggi

Flexible schedule. Government benefits, 401k match.

Svantaggi

Management at this office is the worst I’ve experienced in my professional career. Micro-management, over-the-should supervision by mouth breathing Type A personalities. Turnover is extremely high due to poor management and unrealistic expectations. Upper management is petty and retaliatory and this trickles down to lower management and the rank-in-file.
