All signs point to a company that is a “sinking ship” not one that is progressing year after year. Management and HR are writing positive reviews to ensnare people. Don't fall for it. A few other things to know about this work place. - Leadership and staff turnover are frighteningly high. The engineering leadership has been replaced yearly. - Recent lay off last month included a significant amount of staff across all departments and levels of the organization. - Ownership doesn’t seem interested in investing in a CTO or other leadership that is truly exceptional with a solid history of success in leading software organizations. - Lack of professional portfolio management or product leadership. CTO is in charge of the product vision and direction despite lack of experience. - The CEO and CTO are out of touch with modern times. They expect engineering employees to sit in their desk staring at their screen for 8 hours a day. Taking breaks or working remotely will meet with sidelined complaints from management to other staff members. The feedback gets back to the employee in an indirect not direct way. - Bullies rule the roost. CTO is a bully and pits team members against each other. He rewards other bullying behavior from others. Quite possible that this behavior is reinforced even higher up in the organization. - The team based culture they speak of is a facade. The CTO pulls people on and off teams at will. He calls this picking from the “Resource Pool”. This undermines the development of teams. Also focuses on individual rather than team success. - CEO likes to send cryptic emails without explaining context. They focus on what is wrong. Stick not carrot. Very uninspiring, confusing and demotivating. - Product is unstable and they want to continue bandaging it. - Honesty is not valued. If you bring stuff up to HR/Management you will be viewed as a problem and most likely become a target who will eventually be forced out.
