Vantaggi

XQ is part of the Emerson Collective, which comes with great health insurance and perks. If you are the type of person who likes staying in the know, this will also be a great benefit. XQ also offers competitive compensation. Some of the people are incredibly brilliant at what they do.

Svantaggi

XQ is more like a vanity project run by one or two people at the top than a functioning non-profit. No matter what department you work in, what role you have, you will work on something that either gets killed a month after you've put your sweat and tears into it or witness it morph into something else entirely out of your control that you know will fail. The best you can hope for is that your project fades into oblivion. You will work on unnecessarily crazy deadlines, due to the fact that none of the managers can agree to keep to a process or pipeline. And the higher up you are the in chain, the more likely you are to be dressed down publicly in front of your colleagues. While some people will call this the price of great work, it is more often the price of poor planning. XQ respects expertise very little internally, instead opting to turn to big names and celebrities for promotion. The organization tends to push projects toward grandiosity instead of humble, effective ideas. Teams that are the backbone of the educational part of XQ are under resourced and kept in the background. Collaboration between teams is almost non-existent due to the chaotic nature of the projects. Nepotism is rampant and will get you farther than any skill or passion you have. There is no process for advancement in your career, unless your manager actually cares about you, which a few good ones do.

Vantaggi

Unique approach. Intensely ambitious vision and mission. I have never seen an intersection of different skills and backgrounds of people taking on such a big challenge of reimagining High Schools in America. The mission is #1 and is a very powerful way of adding meaning to ones work. If you are intellectually curious, want to stretch, love a culture of excellence and are a builder and problem solver — you can do well at XQ.

Svantaggi

All the experts in the room can be intimidating and sometimes hard to get a word in. This is not a 9-5, phone it in job and it can be very demanding . All work will be challenged, on the merit— so no room for mediocrity. That takes getting used too. That is not really a con for me, but reading some other highly biased (and bitter) reviews published here on Glassdoor— know that some mediocre folks got through and they are big mad.

Vantaggi

Incredibly talented and mission-driven colleagues. Strong compensation and excellent benefits. There are many smart, hardworking people across the organization who genuinely care about the work and the communities the mission is meant to serve.

Svantaggi

I wish I had read the Glassdoor reviews before accepting this role. I remember being genuinely excited to join XQ and to be part of an organization that's part of Emerson Collective. At the time, it felt like a dream opportunity — the pay and benefits were strong, but what attracted me most was the mission and what I believed would be a thoughtful, values-driven environment. Unfortunately, almost immediately after starting, I sensed that something was off. The environment often felt tense, and it seemed like many people were walking on eggshells. There were frequent whispers, side comments, and a general undercurrent of fear and dysfunction that made it difficult to feel secure or supported. In my experience, the workplace culture was chaotic and unhealthy. I witnessed colleagues being spoken to in ways that felt demeaning and disrespectful, and it often seemed like leadership was aware of these dynamics but failed to meaningfully address them. I also experienced communication that felt confusing, dismissive, and at times gaslighting. What made the experience especially disappointing was how disconnected the internal culture felt from the organization’s stated mission. I came in believing deeply in the work, but my time there was incredibly taxing and had a negative impact on my well-being. I hope future candidates do their research, ask direct questions about culture and leadership, and pay close attention to the patterns described by former employees. For me, this was a deeply disappointing experience and one I would caution others to consider carefully before accepting a role.
