Thank you for sharing your feedback. You’re right that the work we do at Yonder is interesting and important -- now more so than ever. I’ve been lucky to do this work alongside our talented team members, past and present. Like many startups, the recent unprecedented economic uncertainty due to COVID-19 required us to make some very difficult decisions, and we did let go of some amazing team members. It’s my job to anticipate problems in the market and prepare the company accordingly -- I consider the fact that we needed to do a layoff as a failure of that responsibility, but nevertheless it was necessary to ensure the long-term health of the company. We need to stay focused on succeeding, together, in our mission of building a more authentic internet.
As an early stage company, we have to be comfortable trying new things as we learn how to best accomplish that mission. Every employee of an early stage startup like ours has to enjoy learning and embrace change for us to be successful as we continue to pursue the same mission we’ve had since founding the company.
I’m proud of the leadership team at Yonder. It’s a group of talented, experienced industry veterans who have built companies and understand how to take software products to market. Particularly for employees who were with us early on, I know the change to a more formal management team has been a challenge. But I think our strong company culture remains intact, even as the business grows up. The leadership team genuinely cares about what employees think, advocates for direct transparent communication, and sets clear expectations for the teams they lead. Getting internal communication right is tough. We’re constantly working to improve this, but at a baseline will continue to default to transparency -- we walk through our quarterly board updates with the entire company, hold regular AMAs, and directly address problems in the business, even when those conversations are difficult.
We welcome any suggestions from our team members about how to improve our communication, ensure that everyone feels heard, and continue to work together to succeed in our mission.
