Figuring things out as they went, red tape

Wonderful people who care about what they are doing and about you as well. They're a "startup" except that they are also wholly owned by a large parent company at the same time. So in many ways they have the good things about being a startup (for example, you always know when your next paycheck is arriving and it won't bounce) while lacking many of the downside things.

Not a lot, there is always some concern that the parent company may swallow us whole at some point. That would give them some really good software and some great people (who get poached regularly by them for other things anyway). So there's that. But it seems like if that were to happen it won't be for another couple of years at least, I think the prospects of aptitude succeeding enough to keep them from doing that are pretty good, and it probably wouldn't be the end of the world even then. The parent company is still a very good company, it would just not be where most of the software engineering part of aptitude would likely want to work.
