As we conclude Black History Month, we honor and celebrate Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, a pioneering American economist, lawyer, and civil rights advocate who made a profound impact as the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in economics and the second African American woman to receive a Ph.D. in any subject. Breaking barriers, she became the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania’s law school and to be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. Throughout her life, she served on numerous boards, committees, and commissions and held office in many local and national organizations. She served on President Truman’s Committee on Human Rights and was appointed chair of the White House Conference on Aging by President Carter. Her enduring impact is reflected in organizations like the Sadie Collective, inspiring African American women to pursue careers in economics and data-driven fields.
