Earlier this week, we had the privilege of hosting “Discover Buxton: A Legacy of Inclusion” in recognition of Black History Month. Author Rachelle Chase shared the remarkable story of Buxton, Iowa – a coal-mining town just 30 miles from Pella that, in the early 1900s, modeled racial and economic inclusion in ways that were decades ahead of its time. Black and White residents lived, worked and led together, building a thriving community rooted in opportunity and mutual respect. We’re grateful to the Pella Historical Society for co-hosting the evening community session, and to the African American Museum of Iowa for providing a traveling exhibit that brought Buxton’s history to life. Learning from stories like Buxton’s reminds us that inclusion isn’t a new idea – it’s part of Iowa’s history.
