Colloquio
I want to preface this review by saying that I never write bad reviews - people can have an 'off' day and you never know what's going on behind the scenes. I mean this sincerely. However, this interview experience was so bad that I'm still unnerved three days later. I don't want ANYONE to experience what I experienced. Additionally, I want to note that this company called ME and suggested I might be a good fit for their PM position.
The HR Rep was professional and after an initial phone screen I was invited to the office for an interview with the leads. The in-person interview started off normally with a "Tell us about yourself," question. However, as I spoke, I could tell one of the folks seemed… angry? A look of suspicion on his face and arms tightly crossed. This person clearly did not believe (?) or like me. That's fine! It's not always a good fit! But… have a little grace about it. Because I have an unfortunate reflex to want to make people like me and because I needed a job, I kept trying. Big mistake. Huge. I wish I had simply left, because what happened next was so… gross! It was like an episode of "Defend Your Life!" and it seems like the worst assumptions were made about gaps in my resume or moves between companies. I fully understand wanting to know about this, as it can indicate job-hopping or firings, but there are often reasonable explanations for this! Consider: looking for jobs in a new city which takes time, different employment practices in different cities (specifically more contract roles in Tech co's on WC) trying to make a career change, taking care of sick relatives. All real things that have happened to me and… many other people! I wouldn't have minded explaining all of this, but the anger about it was just so weird. Why? I just don't get it.
Obviously, I did not get this job :) and the HR Rep was very kind about it. I believe training in proper interviewing techniques would be really helpful for the leads in this company. Also, a reminder that it’s ok to not like a candidate for whatever reason, but it’s not ok to treat them poorly. Have some grace.
