      Candidatura

Ho presentato la mia candidatura online. La procedura ha richiesto 2 settimane. Ho sostenuto un colloquio presso CarTrawler (Dublino, Dublino) nel mese di mag 2018

      Colloquio

1st: email from the recruiter to schedule a phone interview. 2nd: Phone interview with a HR representative and team member: general questions around my CV and my experience so far and about the role I applied for: why I applied, what's my understanding of the role, what technology I have used and what skills I can transfer to the new role; there was a couple of more detailed competency based questions too. After a phone interview I received a positive feedback and they felt I was a good candidate for the role. A following day I received an invitation for an on-site interview with the same team member who attended the phone interview + the team lead. When an onsite interview day came, I arrived to CarTrawler's office a few minutes before the scheduled time, the offices look the same like in the pictures which made me feel somewhat like "deja vu". The team member arrived at the reception on time and she took me to small meeting room in which we waited a few minutes for a Team Lead who was late. In the meantime we exchanged a few sentences about living in Ireland - that helped to relax a bit more :-). When the Team Lead arrived and greeted with me I instantly felt some kind of "unfavorable" vibrations beaming from him towards me. He started the interview and after a few minutes I knew he didn't like my candidature or at least his body language, the way he talked and face expressions were not very enthusiastic about me which made me feel a little bit nervous. The first stage of the interview was to talk about my experience, the Team Lead asked specific questions (some of them about my previous work that had very little if nothing to do with the car rental industry I currently work in or the role I applied for at Car Trawler). Then I heard questions from both interviewers related to the college I graduated from last year and finally we went to the stage in which we talked about the role I applied for and the CarTrawler as a company (e.g. do I know how CarTrawler makes profit/uses its produts + give example) . I didn't get many questions like this though. Not many topics strictly related to the job / technical skills that are required to do that job (those few ones I was asked were pretty general ones, it usually indicates that the interviewer is either stressed, not prepared or simply not interested in you) and yet during the interview I felt I was not being explored thoroughly with industry-specific questions by the interviewers, especially that I come from car rental industry (corporate environment with a solid technical background) and I didn't feel I was asked the right questions that would help me to show my full potential and the knowledge I had gained within last few years. I brought some good quality data visualization printouts (work or college projects) to show my technical capabilities and I think it was my mistake as I did put myself into challenging moment when the Team Lead asked specific questions about these visualizations (analysis) e.g. what business conclusions a specific visualization brings (he picked the worst possible visualization to talk about -from my perspective :) - and for a few seconds I struggled to answer reasonably his questions that seemed to be aimed at finding something to sink me in :-) but eventually I came up with a decent answer after which he gave the nod but the moment when I was working on the answer must have not been too convincing for him I think (?). My overall feeling after onsite interview was rather positive but I felt I didn't show even 70% of me which partly was my fault but also due to "little-exploratory " questions I was asked. I didn't feel the chemistry from the Team Lead from the beginning to the end of the interview which probably affected my confidence and the quality of my answers. After the interview I found out that the Team Lead had been with CarTrawler for just 3 months (!?), and he came from non-travel / non-car rental industry. This would explain very few typical industry/role related questions. I felt some questions were aimed to find my weak side (to have a reason to fail me) rather than to explore my strengths. On the other hand, the second interviewer (woman) seemed ok (a bit nervous though). I was not selected to the final, third stage of the interview process with a department manager. It was my second attempt to CarTrawler and I 'll think twice before applying again, if ever ...it's a bit disheartening for somebody with 5 year experience in leading car rental company (corporate) holding an analytical/business supporting role + degree in analytics +digital marketing, strong SQL, Tableau ... I've got a strong feeling that hiring managers / non HR people involved in the recruitment process at CarTrawler are not necessarily the best recruiters ... HR part of the recruitment at CarTrawler is usually very good, friendly and focused on facts / exploration.

Call with recruiter, call with the hiring manager. Both went well and they were very nice people. After that I had 5 days to complete a take home assignment. Once I submitted the assignment I didnt hear back for almost a month so I followed up, as even though I knew I was no longer in consideration, asking candidates to spend hours on an assignment and not coming back is not right. They eventually got back to me the following week and said they were moving forward with someone else. My assignment was good etc. And that there is another role they would like me to consider but they are waiting for approval to post and share it. Been a month since, still nothing. Thats fine i wadnt considered, but shouldn't get people's hopes up like that. Overall it was bad form from them and a bad experience, I put a lot of hours into the process and wasnt treated well.
