Two technical rounds, 9 questions each. First one was more code oriented, second one was a system design problem. Both interviews went very well but was shocked to get a rejection since the position was already filled. Why inteview, if the position is filled?

First, the hiring manger mailed me and sent me a list of questions which filled out and sent back. Then they asked me give possible time slots for intern for the next month. 2 back-to-back interviews were scheduled. I talked regarding the research I do, and field I would like to work in, and the scope of the team's work.
