      Colloquio

Interesting Note: Manager, Risk Modeling = Risk Analyst (At eBay, "Manager" does imply a supervisory role, just a pay grade) Best recruiter I've ever worked with got in touch with me for a basic phone screen. I was told basic information about the position I was applying for and then I was asked for a background of myself. Any questions I was asked were about my experience. I was also asked for a target salary. We immediately scheduled a time for me to talk to the hiring manager. Hiring manager called and told me more about the position, the team, etc and then I spoke about my background, skills, and job interests. The hiring manager asked basic questions about the details of my technical skills and the things I did in my past work experience. There were no tricky or technical questions, and although that made the interview easier it felt like I hadn't demonstrated anything during the conversation. Nevertheless, the original recruiter called me again and told me that the hiring manager felt that I was the type of person he was looking for and wanted me to go in for an on-campus interview to talk to the team. The interview day consisted of 5 back-to-back 45 minute interviews with individuals ranging from a director to several "Managers" in the risk management department. I prepared by researching all the LinkedIn profiles of the people I was interviewing and by practicing all of my skills that were listed on my resume. I wore business casual clothes (collared shirt, sweater, pants; kind of geeky) and I prepared a lot of my own questions for the interviewers. All 5 interviews felt about the same, although the personalities of the interviewers and topics discussed varied quite a bit. Each was basically a conversation starting with my background and what I've done that was relevant to the position I was applying to. Each interviewer gave me plenty of time to ask my own questions and for us to discuss the responsibilities of the position, eBay's risk management department, etc. The most interesting thing is that there were very few technical questions, no problem solving questions, and none of those typical terrible interview questions. Rather, they used a "get to know you" approach to interviewing, which I liked. As soon as the recruiter began to receive feedback, she got in touch with me and let me know how it was going. A few days later I got an offer. The offer was significantly above my original target, but it was about what I was expecting after learning more about the role. I was really grateful that eBay didn't lowball since my original salary requirement was pretty low, and of course I didn't bother to negotiate. Overall I felt better about eBay's interview process from day 1 than any other I've experienced. A lot of that is probably thanks to the recruiter and great team and not so much eBay itself. My advice to anyone trying to prepare for a similar interview is to make sure that your resume is solid (don't try to oversell anything) and make sure that you're ready to tell exactly how your experience is valuable to the position, and have a genuine enthusiasm and interest in learning and growing in the position to which you are applying. Good luck!
