There are some brilliant people here that I enjoy working with, and there is always something to learn about. The checks don't bounce.

Mandatory "training" and "goal tracking" - often during times where a massive amount of work also needs to get done, somehow. I have yet to learn much of anything from these "training/goal" sessions. Mandatory time off - offices are closed from xmas to new years, and you are forced to use your personal time off. If somebody earns their PTO they should be able to use it as they want/need to. Insurance offerings went from top of the line to middle of the road. Salaries are capped - you *might* get a bonus, but that bonus is a capped % of your salary (and doesn't amount to much) - so you will never make more money unless you move up or move out. There are no merit-based raises or other types of bonuses - at least that are available to me. The on-boarding process is very long, and we have seen a huge knowledge pool leave w/ more probably on the way out and a ton of new employees to train, with minimal documentation. I have seen people cry at work - it can be stressful, and upper management unforgiving. Be wary of any newer 5 star reviews - they are likely fresh employees being asked to post here.

I believe that we have some of the brightest folks working for us in the industry. All feedback is valuable and we will continue to find ways to improve, however I wanted to address some of your specific concerns here. The introduction of KPI’s and quarterly goal setting is a new process for us and it can be a challenge make a part of your regular routine. With the introduction of online tools and a quarterly cadence to review with your manager it is our hope that this will further enhance transparency throughout the organization. As HighWire matures we continue to look for ways to enhance our employee benefits. We recently rolled out expanded health benefits that include increasing employer paid life insurance to 2x employee annual salary and introducing pet insurance, cancer insurance and an employee assistance program. We also recognized a change in health providers and plan design as part of this enhancement which allows us to offer vastly similar benefits at a fraction of the premium costs, saving some employees thousands per year. To clarify, our newly implemented bonus program enhances our pay for performance compensation philosophy and offers employees the ability to directly impact their annual earnings, once funded, at a target percentage greater than the typical merit pool. We have on-boarded 50 new employees in recent months, and you are absolutely right, on-boarding so many employees does present a challenge. With the introduction of our learning management system as well as our new cross functional team initiative focused on implementing a core documentation platform and best practices for knowledge sharing, we hope to continue to see a positive impact on on-boarding efficiency. HighWire Press always was and still is a fairly typical Silicon Valley tech sweatshop, better than some, worse than others. What set it apart was that it was a non-profit which was a department of Stanford. It was great to be part of a world-class academic institution and Stanford had phenomenal benefits. HighWire also hired many extraordinarily smart people. While always chaotic, there was an all-for-one attitude for many years.

New executive management was brought in 3 years ago who executed brutal layoffs and constantly changed their strategy. Many of the best people were either layed off or quit when the managerial culture became so toxic. Workloads became enormous and people squabled to get get work off of their plate and onto somebody else's. Much of the work was off-shored to India with very mixed results. Things improved somewhat over the past year due to process improvements. The core technology is an antique, despite efforts to freshen it up around the edges. HighWire has recently been spun-off from Stanford as a privately held, for-profit corporation, so all of the benefits of being associated with Stanford have evaporated.
