Summary: Sales Rep who pulled off several shady deals are flagged to the sales management, but ignored and covered up. The said sales rep was not penalised with HubSpot’s use-good-judgement plan, but instead promoted. Background: An AE sent out several emails to existing customers, telling them that they can procure a new SKU without additional cost. Essentially, the AE gave a major and perpetual discount off the existing products, and added the new SKU in the new contract at full price. With that, the AE gets recognised for the full revenue associated with the new SKU (yes, that is how the HubSpot sales commission plan used to work. It was recently changed in Feb 2020). This does not positively grow the business in the long run, and on the contrary, harms the business which operates on a subscription basis. When the services team has consolidated the deals closed due to this bad practice, the management turned their cheeks and ask for the team to not “finger-point”. It makes sense, as such big discounts require the approval of the higher sales management and they were part of the team that made such shady deals possible. Due to the “new revenue” brought in by the said AE, he was promoted in the following month. It's a slap in the face for the others. Conclusion: Hard work is overrated at HubSpot. Learn how to game the system.

I've been a bit tied up with COVID 19 response, but needless to say gaming the system is not how folks win and not at all how we encourage people to operate, so I hope you'll flag this to your HR business partner and/or to sales ops as that's the best mechanism for a fix here-it's impossible for me to address without a geo/territory/manager/context. Great people, everyone is so understanding and supportive. Culture is fun and energizing, people seem happy to be here. There's lots of ways to get involved outside of your day job. Awesome benefits and flexibility - love the remote first work environment, week of rest, open PTO, etc. Robust tech stack - lots of tools available for me to do my job.

The teams you work with are phenomenal. The knowledge combination between an internal customer facing teams, engineering product development teams, and Sales are unmatched.

Excessive use of PIPs to oust employees after multiple high revenue launches, with no explanation, actual documentation, or factual data. Reviews have been adjusted to allow for terminations post pre-approved leaves. Salaries are a joke. You are always in a cover yourself mode 24/7. Management reviews are consistently a 2 or 3 out of 5 no matter what. If a team decides you aren’t in the group, management will put you on a “unofficial” PIP without telling you, in order to surprise you at a later date. Even if they are unfounded. Beware of possibility of negative backlash post launches. They will feel the need to assign blame ( such as for timelines or issues related to bugs). Regardless of performance or level of involvement. This is an enormous company with many large paths for career advancement. But micro management is rampant, leaving little room for doing the daily expectations of your actual role. This degrades your opportunities for career advancement.
