Management across R&D sections is, generally, appalling, with shockingly poor communication skills and lack of interest. Talented R&D staff are not used to their full potential and are left to manage themselves. Petty politics that prioritise irrelevant work. Poor performance is not challenged and dealt with, particularly at the management level. No recognition when you do a good job. Pay is shockingly arbitrary, unfair and very low in certain cases. Progression is unclear and very slow.
