This month we're spotlighting rare diseases and Parexel colleagues who've been impacted by them. ✨ Meet Stacy Morrow, a member of our Patient Community, which harnesses the experience and passion of Parexel colleagues who have been patients or care partners to loved ones with life-changing illnesses to bring a unique perspective to the drug development process. We spoke with Stacy about her experiences living with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine. Read on for insights from Stacy on her 21-year journey toward diagnosis and the importance of self-advocacy. 💜 "I was misdiagnosed from the age of 16 to 37 with all kinds of things: growth spurt, pain from athletics, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the saddest one, 'It’s all in your head.' Even as a nurse and a strong advocate, it still took 21 years to diagnose." 💜 "In 2007, after relocating, I saw a new rheumatologist. Despite being on RA medication, I doubted my diagnosis. During my first visit, the doctor carefully listened as I described my symptoms and pinpointed my SI joint. He quickly suspected Ankylosing Spondylitis. The following week, I returned for lab results and tears filled my eyes as he confirmed my long-awaited diagnosis. After 21 years of misdiagnosis, one doctor finally got it right!" 💜 "Don't give up on getting diagnosed. Be patient, give yourself grace, and continue the search. Find a provider who listens to you."
